Bill Gates is no Steve Jobs. He’s not a charismatic showman or messianic artist-technologist. He’s something arguably better than that: He’s an action hero. Who else but a comic-book superhuman could claim credit for saving nearly six million lives? Such is the argument made by a handsome infographic created by Frugaldad.com called "Redefining Action Hero: Bill Gates is Better than Batman." (Actually it’s more like one of those long-scrolling graphic slideshows than a true infographic, but we’ll let this one slide.)

Obviously, Bill Gates didn’t literally save every one of those lives with his own two bare hands; Frugal Dad is making a point about the impact of Gates’s philanthropic organization, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is dedicated to (among other things) eradicating diseases like malaria, whooping cough, and yellow fever. According to the sources cited, Mr. Gates’s philanthropic giving is directly responsible for saving 5,812,000 lives "by bringing vaccines and improved health care to children internationally"--and possibly 7.6 million by 2019, "all children under five." When you put it that way, Gates sounds better than Superman, Jesus, and Santa Claus put together, not just Batman.
It’s rather amazing that Gates has given $28 billion to charity so far, $2 billion more than the U.S. budget for foreign aid--part of a commitment to disbursing at least half his entire net worth within his own lifetime. But it’s not only about writing checks. According to the graphic, Gates created a multiplier on his own capital in the form of The Gavi Alliance, which brings the influence of UNICEF, the United Nations, and the World Bank to bear on pharmaceutical companies with the goal of getting them to lower the cost of lifesaving drugs. Cheaper vaccines mean more people (especially children) in developing nations don’t die of diseases the rest of us never have to worry about. The alliance successfully pushed the cost of a rotavirus vaccine down by 99%.

A court in Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates, sentenced an African housemaid to three months in prison and ordered her deportation on charges of getting pregnant after an affair with the 15-year-old son of her Arab employer.
The boy’s father had taken his maid to hospital last year and doctors informed the police about her pregnancy.
The maid confessed to police investigators that she had a relationship with the son of her employer.
"The court sentenced her to three months and ordered her deportation on charges of adultery and illegitimate pregnancy," the Sharjah-based Arabic language daily Alkhaleej reported.
It said the court also sentenced the boy to three months of detention, after which he would be handed over to his father to be under his control.

A Singaporean woman spent 932 days on the toilet as she felt “someone” was holding her down and preventing her from leaving.
The woman, 58, was said to be suffering from depression. Her husband Ong Kean On, 64, with the help of the police and ambulance staff, managed to send her to the Institute of Mental Health for treatment.
Ong said his wife had not left the toilet since May 25 in 2009 and that she ate, drank, and slept on the toilet.
He added that she refused to leave the washroom and complained that “someone” threw stones at her and also that water was dripping on her. Her condition has improved after she received treatment at the institute and she had not insisted on sitting on the toilet since returning home.

At first glance, it looks like an action sequence from Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom.
But, in reality, it is the daily commute to and from work and school for of adults and children in Lebak, Indonesia.
Clinging for dear life on a disintegrating wood-and-wire suspension bridge, children as young as five take their lives into their hands fowarding the Ciberang River every day.

The river crossing become precarious and potentially fatal last week after the suspension bridge was almost washed away by flooding.
A pillar supporting one side of the crossing collapsed, leaving the wooden planks that acted as a path tilted to one side.
Only one side of the suspension bridge remained intact, meaning commuters have had to carefully pick their way over the bouncing structure.

It is far from stable, and locals have already reported sections disappearing overnight.
Children who live on the other side of the bank must use the damaged bridge to get to school.

Sofiah, a student who traverses the bridge each day, explained that the nearest other crossing was half an hour’s walk away.
Seeing as that would mean getting up earlier each morning, and coming home later each night, she said she would rather risk the crossing on the collapsed ropes.
The river is a popular tourist attraction, with its fast waters used by thousands of holidaymakers who wish to go white-water rafting.
